One calculator and 2 readiness checks

Three tools built for one job each: readiness before you file or track anything, sorting your filing situation, and planning what to do with a refund once it arrives.

Refund document organizer

Answers whether you actually have what you need on hand before you file, amend, or start chasing a delayed refund.

Assumptions this uses
  • Assumes you're checking readiness before filing or before contacting the IRS about a refund, not partway through either process
  • Assumes each item reflects your honest current status
  • Assumes this covers common readiness gaps, not every document a specific unusual situation might require

Limitations: This is a self-check, not a guarantee that your return or amendment will be accepted or processed without further questions once you file.

Before you panic

The IRS refund tracker updates once a day, overnight

Checking "Where's My Refund" multiple times a day won't show anything new — it typically refreshes once every 24 hours, usually overnight. If your status hasn't changed since yesterday, that's expected, not a sign of a problem. Give it 24 hours before checking again, and remember the tool only shows federal status; your state refund has its own separate tracker.

Which refund situation applies to you?

Answers what kind of refund timeline and tracking approach generally fits your specific filing situation, based on how you filed and what changed this year.

Assumptions this uses
  • Assumes your answers reflect this tax year's actual situation, not a typical year
  • Sorts toward a general reading of your filing complexity, not a refund amount or a guaranteed timeline
  • Does not access any IRS or state system — it only sorts your answers into a general category

Limitations: This sorts you toward a general reading of your situation, not a specific refund estimate or a guarantee of processing time, which only the official IRS and state trackers can tell you.

Refund savings goal planner

Answers how a lump-sum refund could realistically help you reach a savings goal, once it arrives.

Assumptions this uses
  • Assumes a steady monthly savings rate on top of whatever refund amount you add once, not a variable saving pattern
  • Assumes a constant annual return rate rather than real-world market variation
  • Does not know or estimate your actual refund amount — you enter your own starting figures

Limitations: This is a general savings projection, not a refund estimate — it does not calculate what your refund will actually be, only how a lump sum you add could affect a savings goal over time.
